2nd FIBRE open workshop took place succesfully

The 2nd FIBRE open workshop took place succesfully in the premises of UPC in Barcelona on 5th November 2013.

After the opening speeches by the UPC dean and the General Director of ICT in Generalitat Catalunya, the OFELIA project coordinator Hagen Woesner delivered an interesting keynote speech, highlighting generic issues in SDN research and practice, rather than focusing on OFELIA results. Following up, FIBRE members explained the project activities and achievements to the audience, along with the presentation of a set of three live experiment demos.

The best part of the workshop was the last session, involving two representatives from the industry (Telefonica, Colt) and two representatives of academia working in FI research. After a brief exposition of their activities, a round table discussion coordinated by FIBRE member Marcos Salvador took place, where different views of SDN research and practice were discussed. For instance, several questions of interest were discussed, such as how important can the research testbeds being built become for the industry itself, or what kind of skills a graduate student should acquire in order to easily adapt to industry needs while also being able to push the state of the art further.
